USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Con WWE reportedly has no intention of taking the interim title off Chelsea Green or writing her off television despite her suffering a serious injury last week. WrestleVotes on Fightful Select reported that the company remains optimistic about her injury status and is not looking to divert from the momentum around her. Green is expected to be out of action for a number of weeks. A source said she is not expected to be removed from television or stripped of the championship, and as of August 12, she was scheduled to appear on the August 14 SmackDown. Those inside WWE were impressed by the social media numbers her SummerSlam title win generated. Green suffered a broken orbital bone on the August 7th episode of SmackDown in Philadelphia, teaming with Tiffany Stratton against Women’s Tag Team Champions Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid. Bryan Alvarez reported that Reid landed on Green’s head while the team delivered their finish, and that nothing looked wrong on the broadcast. Green confirmed it herself on Instagram the following day. “I did get injured last night. Stuff happens. It’s live television. It’s wrestling. It’s an occupational hazard. I ended up in the emergency room, and I have a broken orbital bone.” Green won the interim championship in a ladder match at SummerSlam on August 2, six days before the injury. The interim title exists because Rhea Ripley is out with a torn meniscus. WWE crowned an interim champion as an injury workaround and got a genuine hit, with an audience that had spent years enjoying Green as a comedic act suddenly invested in her as a title holder. That does not happen on command, and a company sitting on that reaction is not going to hand the belt to someone else because of a facial fracture. Keeping her visible is the sensible middle path. Orbital fractures typically heal in a month or two and often do not require surgery, and wrestlers have worked through them in protective masks before. Even if she cannot take contact, promos, ringside appearances, and a title she never physically loses keep the story alive without risking her eye. What makes it awkward is the division underneath. Ripley is out until January at the earliest, Green is out for weeks, and SmackDown now has two champions who cannot wrestle. WWE bought itself time with the interim belt and has now spent most of it. The plan reported here works if Green comes back within a month. If it stretches past that, the company will be having the vacating conversation about both of them, but let’s all hope that doesn’t happen. Related Headlines
