Six months after joining Dallas Express Sports Network, Randy Galloway admits he quit after the startup venture misrepresented his opinions of legacy media.

In February, right-wing media outlet Dallas Express and CEO Chris Putnam partnered with TV veteran Chris Yates’ Dallas Sports Network to form the Dallas Express Sports Network (DXSN). During the launch, Galloway, who has long been friends with Yates, was announced among a list of prominent contributors.

Galloway spent more than half a century as a powerhouse in Dallas sports, working in print and radio for the Dallas Morning News, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and the Dallas ESPN Radio affiliate. At 83, Galloway agreed to join DXSN, believing it would be fun to have a casual outlet to express opinions and talk local sports. But the fun didn’t seem to last long for Galloway, who quickly felt misrepresented by the outlet.

After a big deal was made about Galloway’s addition to DXSN earlier this year, Steven Monacelli of D Magazine noticed the veteran sports media personality was quickly removed from the outlet’s list of contributors.

“I liked the guys I was working with,” Galloway recently told Monacelli. “But one screwup pissed me off.”

Galloway explained his abrupt departure from the sports branch of a right-wing Dallas media outlet stemmed from a March podcast clip headline that read, “Randy Galloway: Old Media is DEAD- Social Media is Taking Over.”

<span class="mce_SELRES_start" data-mce-type="bookmark" style="display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;"></span>

“My point was that the golden days are dead,” Galloway explained to Monacelli. “But newspapers aren’t.”

During the clip, Yates and contributor Mark Elfenbein were asking Galloway about old media vs new media, seemingly in an attempt at getting him to tout the digital age of media, and particularly the new platform DXSN was offering. But Galloway spoke highly of his time in print, claiming Dallas “led” the country during the golden age of newspapers before adding, “where they are now and where they were, the ballgame is over.” According to Galloway, he also had positive things to say about current newspapers, which were not released in the segment. He supposedly brought that to Yates’ attention, who told him an editor was responsible for clipping content.

During the clip in question, Yates even asked Galloway to share how “refreshing” it was to be on Dallas Express Sports Network at this point in his career. Galloway, however, wouldn’t give Yates what he was looking for, tempering any immediate excitement by flippantly saying, “let me have a couple of shows” before answering that. As it turns out, before Galloway could have a couple of shows, he determined working with DXSN may not have been as freeing as initially portrayed.

“I felt like I was used,” Galloway told Monacelli. “They ain’t reshaping my opinions without me calling bullsh*t.”

Galloway said he was aware of the Dallas Express’ politics and fight against legacy media when he joined DXSN, but he agreed to join because of his long relationship with Yates.

“The first thing [Yates] told me, he said, ‘Hey, this is not about politics,’” Galloway recalled in D Magazine. “But maybe he told me that because he knew I’d be looking it up.”

When Galloway joined DXSN earlier this year, he told Monacelli he wasn’t concerned about the outlet misrepresenting anything he said, because if they did it, he would quit. Several months later, Galloway stayed true to his word. Dallas Express reportedly did not respond when Monacelli reached out for comment.
