The Dallas Cowboys finally made their annual, veteran training camp signing on Monday, agreeing to terms with pass rusher Von Miller. The future Hall of Famer joins a host of other mercenaries the team has added during the last six summers, but Miller could have the biggest impact.
While it looks like it took a few weeks in camp and one preseason game for the Cowboys to realize they needed more help getting to the quarterback, that isn’t the case. And it wasn’t the social media posts from Miller that persuaded the front office to sign the Texas native, either.
According to Miller, this signing was almost a month in the making. Speaking on the Nightcap show with former NFL stars Chad Ochocinco and Shannon Sharpe, Miller explained how the Cowboys reached out before camp to gauge interest:

“They were the first team to contact me, um, a week before training camp. There had been some talks about the Cowboys throughout the whole offseason, and it just seemed right, for me.”
So not only were the Cowboys thinking about adding Miller during the offseason, but things also got more serious just before the team went to training camp. It didn’t take some practices in Oxnard, a joint workout with the Los Angeles Rams and a preseason game for Dallas to pursue Miller, he was already on their radar.
However, the last few weeks' results may have been a factor in the Cowboys finally pulling the trigger. The team has had ample time to take a look at what they have on the roster at pass rusher and decided that Miller would be a valuable addition.
Miller also explained the “hints” he was dropping on social media were real.
“I kinda knew the whole time, I was like, giving hints on social media, and playing with the fans on social media by the Dallas Cowboys for weeks now. It kinda was always there.”

All this time, Miller wasn’t trying to get noticed by the Cowboys, and he wasn’t begging for a deal with the team, he was trying to let fans know what was coming. And late Sunday night, exactly four weeks before the Cowboys begin their quest for a sixth Lombardi Trophy, the two-time Super Bowl champion let the cat out of the bag.
This wasn’t a spur of the moment deal, nor was it the result of Miller selling himself. The Cowboys adding Von Miller has been in the works for weeks now, the time was finally right to make it official.
