Sports journalist Tim Kawakami recently hosted Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob on his podcast, "The Tim Kawakami Show," to talk about their offseason moves or lack thereof. However, one comment from Lacob about a former player sparked controversy among fans. When speaking to Kawakami, Lacob addressed what happened with former No. 7 overall selection Jonathan Kuminga, who appeared to leave the franchise on bad terms after a midseason trade sent him to the Atlanta Hawks. Despite the disappointing end to his tenure, Lacob doubled down on the decision, saying, "I do not view Jonathan Kuminga as a mistake. I think we may have made some mistakes in how would we handle it and how he handled it. Maybe he made some mistakes, and obviously that's well documented, and we had to move on, but he's an NBA player and played in the playoffs and did really well. This is not a mistake at the 7th pick. There were 7th picks that are out of the league." Unfortunately for the franchise, Kuminga was another promising young talent who didn't pan out as expected for one reason or another. Although Yaxel Lendeborg has given fans new hope, the Warriors have seen situations such as this play out often in recent years, having moved on from both Jordan Poole and James Wiseman. Notable selections made after Kuminga in the 2021 NBA Draft include Franz Wagner (No. 8 overall), Alperen Sengun (No. 16 overall), Trey Murphy III (No. 17 overall) and Jalen Johnson (No. 20 overall).
