A moment from the first Test between Australia and Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium, Darwin, has drawn considerable attention on social media. A replay of the moment circulating on social media shows Steven Smith raising his bat to signal for a review even before the on-field umpire had completed his decision on a potential caught-behind appeal, prompting widespread reaction among cricket followers.

As Ebadot Hossain bowled a delivery pitched full outside the off stump, the experienced Australian batter tried to drive the ball through the covers but brushed the bat onto the grass instead. Ebadot made an appeal for a caught-behind dismissal, and before the umpire could even raise his finger, Smith had signalled for a DRS, indicating how confident and aware he was of the situation.

Smith's first-innings DRS escape

Smith was the standout batter in that first innings, top-scoring with 71 off 109 balls. Jake Weatherald's 23 was the next-best contribution from the Australian top order, underlining how much the innings relied on Smith's knock.

The Darwin Test had already produced a notable DRS moment in the first innings. In the 21st over, Smith pushed at a delivery from Ebadot, and Bangladesh appealed for a caught-behind. Smith was on 7 at the time. On-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena turned down the appeal, after which Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto called for DRS. Third umpire Nitin Menon found no spike on the real-time snickometer, and the not-out decision was upheld.

Smith was starting to walk off the field before the DRS result came back, suggesting he believed he had edged the ball. Speaking after play on Day 1, Smith said: "I think so, yeah" when asked whether he had nicked it, and added: "I was lucky? Yeah, it seems that way. You got to take it sometimes." On the reliability of the technology, he said: "Normally it's pretty good, but this time technology saved me."

The second-innings clip shared on X adds another dimension to what has been an eventful Test for Smith in relation to DRS. The Australia versus Bangladesh series continues at Marrara Stadium, with the visitors holding the upper hand after three days of play.
