Day 1 of the first Test between Australia and Bangladesh at Darwin on August 13, 2026, produced an unexpected moment of crowd theatre. Steven Smith paused play during his innings to request a sightscreen adjustment, and a fan in the stands responded with words that quickly spread beyond the ground.

The official broadcaster shared a video of the exchange on their Instagram handle. The caption read: 'STOP BEING A PRINCESS 😂 One fan was FURIOUS with Steve Smith after the Aussie champ took issue with the sight screen.' The clip circulated widely and was broadly received as a light-hearted moment on an otherwise tense day of Test cricket.

The fan's words were captured clearly on camera and directed at Smith using his well-known nickname. The full exchange ran, "Just hit the damn thing, Smudge. Stop being a princess. You are not bigger than the game, Steve; deal with it.' The fan was also heard repeating the line, "You are not bigger than the game, Steve." No response from Smith to the comment has been confirmed.

Smith's innings and Australia's first-innings total

Smith has previously spoken about a rare form of ADHD that makes him prone to distraction and requires minimal visual disruption when batting. The exact nature of the sightscreen problem on this occasion was not specified in available reports.

The incident unfolded against a difficult match backdrop for Australia. The home side ended the first session at 74/4, with Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud removing both openers, including Travis Head for 22. Smith came to the crease during that collapse and contributed 71 runs before Australia were bowled out for 198 in their first innings. Hasan Mahmud finished with career-best figures of 6/55.

The match itself carried historical weight. It was the first red-ball contest between the two sides on Australian soil in 23 years, Bangladesh's previous tour having come in 2003. In reply, Bangladesh closed Day 1 at 96/1 after 24 overs, trailing by 102 runs. Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 35 off 49 balls with six boundaries, while Tanzid Hasan Tamim was on 32 off 67 balls with four boundaries at stumps.

The sole Bangladesh wicket on Day 1 belonged to Shadman Islam, who made 20 before being caught by Nathan Lyon off Mitchell Starc. That dismissal was Starc's 434th in Test cricket, drawing him level with former India all-rounder Kapil Dev on the all-time wickets list.
