WNBA world reacts after the Atlanta Dream strongly reject claims of unfair treatment to Sophie Cunningham supporters during a heated Fever-Dream clash.

The Indiana Fever-Atlanta Dream showdown on Sunday was overshadowed by claims that State Farm Arena security forced Sophie Cunningham supporters to cover their shirts. A mother and daughter, who reportedly paid $1,000 each for their tickets, attended the game to cheer for the Fever guard and support her stance on transgender athletes competing against women.

The following day, the Dream addressed the controversy, saying that “at no point was Dream personnel involved in the decisions made by WNBA security.”

The statement immediately triggered another wave of reactions across the WNBA world.

Atlanta Dream Push Back on Sophie Cunningham Fan Controversy as WNBA Community Sounds Off

The mother wore an “XX/XY” shirt, while her daughter had “For the Girls” printed across the back. According to their account, security approached them before overtime and gave them an ultimatum: “cover the shirts or leave.”

YouTuber Adam Francisco, who interviewed the pair, also claimed that a woman wearing a “Protect Trans Rights” shirt was shown on the arena’s big screen before security later asked her to cover it.

The Dream stated that the organization is committed to providing a “safe and inclusive environment for everyone.” The team added that “WNBA security took actions that fell short of that standard.”

That response did little to calm the backlash.

“Weak and dishonest. You deserve to only play in a 5000 seat arena,” an X user wrote.

“Absolutely disgusting and abhorrent behavior by the organization! Disturbing as well as inexcusable,” another X user added.

“Safe and inclusive are buzzwords. [expletive] outta here. I’d have more respect for you if you just said, ‘yeah we did it, it’s our show,’ a WNBA supporter tweeted.

“Don’t know if I have seen a sport more willing than y’all to insult and make your core audience feel unwelcome,” another user noted.

“So two women were discriminated against at a women’s basketball game for wearing shirts which support women’s rights,” an X handle emphasized what happened.

However, not everyone agreed with the criticism.

“WNBA security did the right thing if it’s truly about creating a safe space for ALL the trans people deserve to feel safe in that environment whether they are a fan or whether they are working in the facility they deserve to feel safe!!! No trans women even play in the W,” an Angel Reese supporter tweeted.

“(Expletive) have no right to be there. They made the right call imo,” another X user wrote.

The controversy also appears to fit a broader pattern. In late July, Cunningham supporters who held a sign thanking her “for speaking up for girls” were reportedly asked to take it down.

Meanwhile, when the Fever faced the Minnesota Lynx earlier this month, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve wore a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt underneath her blazer. WNBA security did not ask the four-time WNBA Coach of the Year to cover the message.

That comparison has only intensified questions about whether similar standards are being applied to opposing viewpoints.

For the Dream, the issue may now be less about one pair of shirts and more about consistency. The team has distanced itself from the decision while promising an inclusive environment.

But until the WNBA explains what security can and cannot allow inside its arenas, the debate over free expression at games is unlikely to disappear.
