Australia faced a challenging position after Bangladesh reached 351 for 6 at stumps on day two of the first Test in Darwin on August 14, establishing a lead of 153 runs. The visitors had dominated the second day of play, with opener Tanzid Hasan scoring a maiden Test century and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributing 84 runs. Australia had been bowled out for 198 on day one, leaving the home team needing strong batting performances to get back into the contest.

All-rounder Beau Webster remained optimistic about Australia's chances despite the difficult situation. He acknowledged the work ahead but backed his teammates to deliver when it mattered most.

"I'm sure everybody's still looking at it, how later win this game of cricket. Obviously, we've got to get these last 4 wickets as cheaply as possible, and then, yeah, probably two really good days of batting, which is going to be hard work, no doubt, but yeah, like I said, the boys in the dressing room, you know, have full faith in their calibre to do it," Webster was quoted as saying by The Hindustan Times.

Pitch conditions and Bangladesh's batting performance

Pitch conditions and Bangladesh's batting performance shaped Australia's bowling approach on day two. The surface had flattened considerably compared to day one, making batting easier for the visitors. Webster explained how Australia had tried multiple strategies to break through Bangladesh's resilient batting lineup.

"Yeah, it’s Test cricket, I suppose that's the way it is. It's obviously a hot day out there, but the wicket looked like it had flattened out. A little bit more than it was in the morning of day one," Webster continued.

"So, yeah, like I said, they've batted really well. We tried a few different plans, wide, straight, spin, some bumpers, try and grab a wicket and see if we can go through it. But yeah, they batted nicely and we have to come up with some more plans tomorrow," he added.

Australia's bowling workload management

Australia's bowling workload management became crucial on a sweltering day in Darwin, with temperatures reaching 32 degrees. The home team rotated eight bowlers across the day to manage fatigue among their frontline pace attack.

"Hot day, you know, we've got the 3 front line quicks [Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood] and [spinner] Nathan [Lyon]. They played him [Lyon] quite well. Nathan sort of forced us to bring some medium pace back on and, you know, Greeny and I shared, I think, maybe 20 overs between us, roughly, and Marnus and Head chipped in as well."

Webster also outlined how Australia balanced the need to maintain pressure while preserving energy for the innings ahead.

“So just a long day of Test cricket where it was hot and, you know, [they were] mindful that we've got another innings, we're going to have to bowl to win this game. So, probably didn't want to burn all 3 of the big boys, you know, by bowling in 25 overs in a day on a 32-degree day," Webster concluded.

Bangladesh's batting had been built on strong partnerships throughout day two. Tanzid added 102 runs for the second wicket with Mominul Haque before combining with Shanto for a 93-run third-wicket stand. Lower-order batsmen Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud had shown resilience, batting together for nearly 25 overs to guide their team safely to stumps.
