College football returns with an interesting MAC showdown in Ypsilanti.

Eastern Michigan hosts Sacramento State on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium, giving both programs an early opportunity to start 2026 with a conference victory. The matchup will stream on ESPN+.

But this isn’t just another season opener.

It’s the first meeting between Eastern Michigan and Sacramento State, Eastern’s first Week 0 appearance and Sacramento State’s first game as a football-only member of the Mid-American Conference.

That gives this matchup plenty of reasons to watch.

Sacramento State Gets Its Welcome to the MAC

Sacramento State officially joined the MAC as a football-only member on July 1, making the Hornets one of the biggest new storylines surrounding the conference in 2026.

And their introduction comes immediately.

There is no warm-up game before conference play. Sacramento State’s first matchup as a MAC member comes on the road against a program that has spent years competing in the league.

That makes Aug. 29 an early measuring stick.

The Hornets are also beginning a new era under head coach Alonzo Carter, who has emphasized energy, competition and discipline throughout preseason practices.

Sacramento State has plenty of unknowns after major roster turnover, but that can also make the Hornets difficult to prepare for in Week 0.

Eastern Michigan doesn’t have much recent film showing exactly what this version of Sacramento State will look like.

Eastern Michigan Has Experience on Its Side

While Sacramento State enters a new conference with a new head coach, Eastern Michigan has stability at the top.

Chris Creighton is entering another season leading the Eagles and has built Eastern into a program capable of competing throughout the MAC.

Eastern also brings back an experienced group for 2026. College Football News described the Eagles as a strong veteran team entering the season, something that could be especially valuable in an opener against a team going through as much change as Sacramento State.

That experience should give Eastern an advantage.

The Eagles know the conference. They know what Creighton expects. And they get to play the game at Rynearson Stadium.

Noah Kim Is One of the Biggest Names to Watch

One of the most interesting players in this matchup will be Eastern Michigan quarterback Noah Kim.

Michigan football fans should recognize the name.

Kim previously played at Michigan State before eventually making stops at Coastal Carolina and Eastern Michigan. He enters 2026 as one of five team captains for the Eagles, showing how important his experience has become inside the program.

For Eastern, having an experienced quarterback could be huge in Week 0.

Opening games can get sloppy. Teams are still figuring out rotations, offenses are working through timing issues and mistakes can quickly change games.

Having a veteran quarterback running the offense gives Eastern someone it can rely on if the game becomes close late.

Sacramento State Has Nothing to Lose

That’s what could make the Hornets dangerous.

Eastern Michigan enters this game as the established FBS program playing at home. Sacramento State is the newcomer trying to prove it belongs.

The pressure won’t be the same on both sidelines.

Sacramento State can come into Ypsilanti aggressive. Trick plays, fourth-down attempts and an attacking style wouldn’t be surprising from a program looking to make an immediate statement.

Some preseason analysis has even identified this matchup as a potential upset spot for the Hornets.

If Sacramento State can stay within one score entering the fourth quarter, things could get uncomfortable for Eastern quickly.

A Huge Game for Both Programs

It might only be Week 0, but this game matters.

Because Sacramento State immediately begins conference play, the winner will leave opening weekend 1-0 in the MAC standings. Eastern’s athletic department notes that this will be the Eagles’ first season-opening MAC game in a full 12-game season since 2012 and their first conference home opener to begin a season since 2004.

That’s a much different situation than the normal opener against a non-conference opponent.

A loss follows you into the conference standings immediately.

For Eastern Michigan, this is a game the Eagles will believe they should win at home.

For Sacramento State, it’s an opportunity to announce its arrival.

Week 0 Could Give Us an Underrated Showdown

Eastern Michigan-Sacramento State won’t receive the same national attention as some of college football’s biggest opening-week matchups.

That doesn’t mean it won’t be worth watching.

You have an established MAC program facing the conference’s newest member. You have a veteran head coach in Creighton against a new era under Carter. And you have two teams immediately playing a game that counts toward the conference standings.

Eastern Michigan has the experience and home-field advantage.

Sacramento State has the unknown factor and an opportunity to make a statement immediately.
