Werder Bremen and Freiburg work out details of Eren Dinkçi loan

Eren Dinkçi is closing in on a return to Werder Bremen after the Bundesliga club reached an agreement with Freiburg over a season-long loan. Kicker currently confirms DeichStube reporting regarding the nature of the deal. The agreement will contain neither a purchase option nor an obligation to buy, while Werder are reportedly set to pay Freiburg a loan fee in the low six-figure range. Dinkçi is expected to undergo his medical at the beginning of the coming week.

Dinkçi himself will be returning to his hometown club. Get German Football Newsreported earlier that the 24-year-old was seeking a move back to Bremen, with Freiburg and Werder working to find a suitable arrangement. The Bremen-born attacker originally joined Werder’s U19s in 2019 before eventually breaking into the senior side. His most productive Bundesliga campaign came away from the Weserstadion, however, when he registered ten goals and five assists across 33 league appearances during a 2023/24 loan at Heidenheim.

Those performances prompted Freiburg to pay approximately €5m for Dinkçi in 2024. His time in Breisgau proved considerably more difficult. Dinkçi managed one goal and four assists in 36 competitive appearances for Freiburg before returning to Heidenheim on loan during the second half of last season. There, his production improved to three goals and three assists in 14 appearances.

Dinkçi adds versatility to changing Werder attack

Dinkçi’s positional flexibility is a significant part of his appeal. He can operate on either wing, behind a centre-forward or, if necessary, as the striker himself. That versatility should help Werder compensate for the recent departure of Romano Schmid while the club continues rebuilding its attacking options. The prospective Dinkçi deal follows another significant piece of business completed on Friday. Werder signed former Hamburg midfielder Ludovit Reis from Club Brugge yesterday.

The club are reportedly still seeking another striker, a right-back and potentially one more midfielder before the transfer deadline. For Dinkçi, meanwhile, the move offers a familiar environment and a realistic chance to revive his career after an uneven two years away from Bremen. Provided the medical and remaining formalities proceed without complications, his return to the Weserstadion should soon be finalized.
