West Ham have confirmed the signing of Celtic midfielder Arne Engels for a reported Championship-record fee of £22 million.

The 27-year-old has signed a five-year deal with an option for a further year at the East London club and becomes their fourth permanent signing of the summer.

Engels made 46 appearances for the Scottish Premiership champions last season across five competitions, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.

The midfielder’s move makes him the most expensive signing in Championship history, surpassing the previous record held by Sindre Walle Egeli, who joined Ipswich Town from FC Nordsjælland for £17.5m.

“It feels amazing to be here, so I’m delighted and I can’t wait to get started,” said Engels, who will wear the number seven shirt this season.

“It’s a really nice project to come into and try to to go back to the Premier League. That’s the big goal. I think that’s everybody’s goal and it’s just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully, we’ll see that it’s going to be a good year then and I’m looking forward to the next ones.

“I’m just looking forward to meeting all the fans at London Stadium. I’m looking forward to this challenging season, but hopefully we can make it a really good one, so let’s go for it!”

The Belgian had been a target for the Hammers for most of the summer, with the club reportedly seeing two prior bids rejected.

Celtic boss Martin O’Neill admitted that the club were ‘disappointed’ to be losing the midfielder, but acknowledged that it was an opportunity that was ‘really hard’ for him to turn down.

Engels began his career at Club Brugge in Belgium. Between 2020 and 2023, he featured 35 times for Brugge’s reserve side, Club NXT, before earning a move to Bundesliga side FC Augsburg.

Despite signing a four-and-a-half-year deal in Germany, Engels spent just one season at FC Augsburg before joining Celtic the following summer.

Engels made an immediate impact during his debut season in Scotland, registering 10 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances.

In January, the Belgian attracted interest from Nottingham Forest, with the Premier League side reportedly seeing three bids rejected, the largest worth £25 million.

O’Neill revealed that despite the interest, Engels never complained and remained committed to Celtic, helping the club secure another Scottish Premiership title.

Engels has represented Belgium at several youth levels and has earned four senior caps for the Red Devils.

He follows Venezuelan midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, former Brighton defender Joël Veltman and winger Manor Solomon in joining the club this summer.

West Ham’s business isn’t done yet as we head into the final weeks of the transfer window. AZ Alkmaar striker Troy Parrott is seen as the next target, with the club reportedly already having one bid rejected.
