The Seattle Seahawks have made the big, if not controversial decision to sign former Detroit Lions first-round cornerback Terrion Arnold, who’s currently facing several felony robbery and kidnapping charges. When Arnold was arrested earlier this summer, the Lions wasted little time in releasing the former Alabama star. However, Arnold drew interest from several teams once he was cleared to work (and travel domestically without an ankle monitor), and the Seahawks were among those teams whose initial interest turned into something much more than that.

Even though Arnold’s contract is expected to be incredibly cheap, the issue is whether or not he’ll be allowed to play in the regular season. The best case scenario is the charges are dropped and the NFL decides not to take further action by suspending him anyway. Either way, Seattle clearly believes Arnold can help a cornerback room that is far from settled with Riq Woolen gone.

It’s only sensible to focus on the football side of the Arnold story. What kind of player are the Seahawks getting? Are his penalty issues correctable? What are his strengths? This is where we hit the emergency button and paged Ryan Mathews, who’s the Senior Editor for Pride of Detroit, the excellent Detroit Lions SB Nation site. They’re plugged into the Lions 100 percent of the way, with Jeremy Reisman doing fantastic work as a credentialed Lions reporter.

In a special 5 Qs and 5 As, I asked Ryan about Arnold’s time in Detroit, and whether or not the Seahawks made a good acquisition from a football standpoint. All embedded tweets were inserted by us, not by Ryan.

1.) I’ve harped on this for a bit given how Seahawks fans viewed Riq Woolen’s penalty issues before he left for Philadelphia: Terrion Arnold has been flagged 17 times when you count offsetting/declined penalties. He’s only played 24 games total. What gives?

The Lions ask a lot of their outside cornerbacks. Playing press man is a non-negotiable, and that requires a level of physicality that continues throughout the route. As a rookie, Arnold racked up eight of those aforementioned penalties in his first four weeks in the NFL, so there is proof that a lot of the handsiness he was getting flagged for early on was corrected with coaching.

Every Terrion Arnold defensive penalty in his rookie season: (He wore 0 as a rookie)

I forgot the one penalty where he just tackled Bobo on a non-target. I'd say his Year 2 penalties are a little less obvious than all the rookie moments. pic.twitter.com/msSTELFq58

Every Terrion Arnold penalty in 2025 (only played 8 games due to injury).

A couple ticky-tack ones (LOL at the first CLE hold) but my best cope is he's miscast in man. He's in position most of the time but can be very handsy.

2.) The Seahawks run a lot of zone coverage. Detroit tends to run a lot more man coverage compared to the rest of the league. Is this a case where Arnold may not have been a schematic fit through his first two seasons?

Arnold definitely fit in Detroit’s system, but again, what the Lions ask of their outside cornerbacks is a lot to handle. They’re oftentimes left out on an island in coverage, and they’re expected to get their noses dirty in the run game. It’s a lot on a player’s plate, but veterans like Carlton Davis and D.J. Reed have shown an ability to thrive in these roles. It’s important to remember that one of the biggest hurdles so far in Arnold’s career has been staying on the field.

After playing 16 games his rookie season, Arnold missed a significant amount of time with a shoulder injury, playing just eight games last year. He initially avoided surgery, but re-aggravated the injury in the Thanksgiving Day game against the Packers, putting him on IR for the rest of the season and forcing him to finally get surgery.

3.) What’s the best thing Arnold has done well over his first two seasons?

The best thing Arnold did over his first two seasons came in the phases of the game where he could be physical. Registering a tackle on a route near the line of scrimmage, contesting a ball at the catch point, making those bang-bang plays where the instincts married the physicality were when Arnold was at his best in Detroit.

@Bischoff_Scott and I have been saying it for a few weeks now. Lions CB Terrion Arnold is getting closer and closer to that first career INT. Great PBU from him here. #OnePridepic.twitter.com/RkRqwfun6y

4.) Did he make any tangible improvements from his rookie season to last (before his season-ending injury)?

One of the biggest training camp darlings in the summer of 2025 was Terrion Arnold. Beat writers were singing his praises, there were videos of Arnold’s great play flooding the timeline, and most importantly, the coaches identified him as a player who was making that jump in Year 2. His coverage was stickier in one-on-one’s vs. the likes of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. He was coming across as a more confident and technically refined player… until the season started. It was one step forward and two steps back in nearly every game. If his coverage was solid, there were lapses in run defense. If the run defense was strong, the coverage was lacking.

5.) Assuming he can actually play suspension-free this season, did the Seahawks just get themselves a moldable, promising corner who can be a major contributor on the league’s best defense?

There was always enough there with Arnold’s play to believe he could put it all together. More reps–and honestly, more help from the front-seven in generating pressure–would help his development and confidence. Going to a team like the Seattle Seahawks feels like the right kind of ecosystem for Arnold to reach his developmental ceiling.

Thank you very much to Ryan for getting back to us so quickly! That’s why Pride of Detroit is forever awesome.
