This summer's World Cup shattered the attendance record with 6.8 million people attending a match.

The tournament was hosted at 16 stadiums in cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Several of the venues were state-of-the-art NFL stadiums like SoFi Stadium while others were historic football cathedrals such as Estadio Azteca.

Despite breaking a landmark record collectively, none of the World Cup venues were among the very largest stadiums across the globe.

With the college football season approaching, fans are preparing to pack stadiums to cheer on their favorite team. Where do venerated venues like Michigan Stadium and Kyle Field rank in the world?

Here is a look at the biggest stadiums in the United States and the world:

What is the biggest stadium in the world?

Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea is the largest stadium in the world with a capacity of 150,000. It opened on May 1, 1989 and was the country's response to South Korea hosting the 1988 Summer Olympics. It is eight stories high and has a floor area of more than 2.2 million square feet. Not only is it massive, but it is beautiful and has a ribbon-like roof constructed of 16 arches meant to evoke a flower. The stadium is a venue for national events, wrestling and the Guinness World Record-holding Mass Games, which saw 100,090 participants in the gymnastics competition in 2007.

Here are the largest stadiums in the world:

  1. Rungrado 1st of May Stadium (Pyongyang, North Korea): 150,000
  2. Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad, India): 132,000
  3. Michigan Stadium (Michigan, U.S.): 109,901
  4. Beaver Stadium (Pennsylvania, U.S.): 107,000
  5. Ohio Stadium (Ohio, U.S.): 102,780
  6. Kyle Field (Texas, U.S.): 102,733
  7. Tiger Stadium (Louisiana, U.S.): 102,321
  8. Neyland Stadium (Tennessee, U.S.): 101,915
  9. Bryant-Denny Stadium (Alabama, U.S.): 101,821
  10. Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (Texas, U.S.): 100,119

What is the biggest stadium in United States?

College football has a monopoly on the largest stadiums in the United States. Despite many renovations by other schools that have increased the capacity of their own stadiums throughout the years, Michigan Stadium on the campus of the University of Michigan continues to hold the title of largest venue in the U.S. with a capacity of 109,901. The Big House was built in 1927 and is uniquely built into the ground. It is home to the 11-time national champion Michigan Wolverines.
