The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into the regular season here in just a few short weeks as they look to get back on top of the sport and win their first national title since 2022.
When looking at the realistic chances of making that happen, nobody is questioning a Bulldogs defense which looks like it could be the best one Kirby Smart has had in years. Most believe Gunner Stockton is capable of taking the next step as well, but who he is going to be throwing to is the main concern fans and media have about this team.
The wide receiver room is just a whole lot of new faces without proven experience in Athens, and while the potential is there, fans are going to need to see it on the field before they trust that this unit can get the team where it needs to be. Fall camp is the time roles get determined and locked in, and the battle in the room for snaps is well underway.
One name who is looking to emerge and lock up a key role right out of the gate in his career is true freshman tight end Kaiden Prothro. Though the former five-star was recruited at the TE position coming out of high school due to his size, it does not seem like that's where the staff sees him starting his career.
Prothro Will Likely Work Out of Slot Early in Georgia Career
The Bulldogs are fortunate to have one of the best tight end rooms in the nation, which will tremendous for the offense means that there's not as much room for a true freshman with so many mouths to feed and not enough snaps to go around.
Prothro is different than your average true freshman though, and while that alone may not be enough to unseat established players in front of him, it is enough that the coaching staff is willing to get creative in order to get him on the field right out of the gate.
Throughout the spring and on G-Day, Prothro worked almost exclusively out of the slot and dominated there, showing an impressive knack for getting open for a player of his size. While it goes without saying he's not your typical slot at 6-foot-6, the presence of Prothro could allow Georgia to create some absolute nightmare mismatches in personnel, which could mask the lack of experience in the room.
Prothro will have to prove it in game action, but clearly the staff feels he's ready to see the field early. If it's out of the slot, this could be a very fun offense in Athens this season.
