For the past two years all of the focus and attention on the national team has been around the golden generation of American players. That time can be seen as a test to see what they are capable of with the World Cup being the final exam. With the tournament behind us those players return to their club teams where the stories about who they are and what they do is much different. Jedi and Captain American aren’t mythical heroes when they’re trying to keep Bukayo Saka at bay or need to fight for their health and spot with AC Milan.

It is four years until the next men’s World Cup – hype will come for young players, there will be the most burning of hot takes about the place of veterans, dual nationals will make elating or heartbreaking choices, and careers will flourish or languish. As the European seasons get underway and the key players for the national team re-join their clubs this comes with changing priorities.

Going into the World Cup players were more focused on what to do to make the roster for the tournament. That meant balancing showing what was expected from Mauricio Pochettino and their club managers. Now that focus shifts significantly to where they play the majority of their games and that might be exactly what players need to do following the added pressure of the World Cup.

Looking at the upcoming season in Europe, there are players who can focus on those priorities and move forward in the ways that are best for them. Looking at the roster, that will look different. Christian Pulisic can focus on AC Milan as his contract is set to expire at the end of this season with his club having an option to add a year. Gio Reyna has taken steps down in recent years looking for consistent playing time amid injuries. With Strasbourg he can have a fresh start, again, but not have the added pressure of doing something to be called into the national team weighing on him.

Elsewhere, Malik Tillman took a step forward with the national team and gets a fresh start with his club. He has an opportunity and perhaps more freedom to develop into the no. 10 role the USMNT sorely needs in the center of the attack. Folarin Balogun can put the red card fiasco behind him and bring the momentum that had gained him so much attention during the tournament to leading the line at Monaco.

Most importantly, there are dozens of stories that are yet to be written. Players who aren’t in the national team picture that in a few short months will be the focus of questions about how they could fit into a lineup or what their performances mean for club and country. Perhaps a goalkeeper emerges or a center back to pair with Chris Richards is uncovered.

The new European season also helps with realigning expectations about the national team and who the players are with their clubs. This is the best generation of players for the USMNT ever and they are largely replaceable on their clubs. Watching how, and if, that changes and evolves will say more about the national team than who is being called into friendlies or games in the Concacaf Nations League.
