Pete Golding is entering his first full season as the head football coach of the Ole Miss Rebels with high expectations from fans after a thrilling run in the last year’s College Football Playoff.

But for first year coaches in the hyper competitive world of college football, there is not usually a welcome mat rolled out for the playoffs or title game. The last time a first year head coach took his team to a national championship was in 2001 with Larry Coker and the Miami Hurricanes.

Now, if you were alive back then and watching college football, there were probably any number of people who could have coached that team to a national championship. The 2001 ‘Canes were LOADED with a ridiculous amount of talent with 17 NFL first round draft picks on its roster (notably: Reggie Wayne, Ed Reed, Andre Johnson, Willis McGahee, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma and Vince Wilwork). This roster ended up producing 38 overall draft picks in the NFL and is considered by many to be one of the best college football teams of the last 30 years.

So this begs a couple questions – does Ole Miss have an incredibly loaded and talented roster that can just outpace the rest of the sport? And if not, does this coaching staff have the experience and ability to raise the talent level to that title competition level?

For the rest of college football, the idea of Ole Miss even sniffing a national title in Golding’s first year is a ludicrous proposition. For Ole Miss fans, hey we gotta believe in it right? There’s the offensive backfield led by Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy and a budding Heisman campaign behind them. The defense returns a ton of talent and has seemingly reloaded by the recruiting efforts of the staff.

If Ole Miss’ defense is better, the offense in theory could take a little step back from last year, and this football team still be incredibly competitive. But if the offense clicks like last year or dare I say even be better? The SEC and rest of the country will know quickly Ole Miss could be a contender yet again.

So yeah, history is against the program, what else is new? Fans are ready for the ball to be spotted in Nashville for a kickoff with Louisville.

We’ll have a preview of every offensive position coming up next on the Cup. Stay tuned.
