The Chicago White Sox didn’t trade for Luis Castillo at the MLB trade deadline simply to add another recognizable name to their rotation. They needed two things from him. Help get them to October, and help their young pitchers learn how to eventually get there without him. Wednesday night showed how Castillo can accomplish both. MORE: MLB awards predictions for the 2026 season After getting knocked around for five runs in four innings during his White Sox debut, Castillo responded with exactly the kind of start Chicago hoped it was acquiring. MLB’s White Sox coverage highlighted Castillo’s dominant turnaround. Aug 12, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago White Sox pitcher Luis Castillo (58) throws the ball against the Cincinnati Reds during the first inning at Rate Field. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images He threw seven scoreless innings against Cincinnati, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out a season-high 10 in a 5-0 win. That’s important because this isn’t a rebuilding team playing out August anymore. Chicago remains atop the AL Central, but Detroit, Minnesota and Cleveland are all close enough that a bad two-week stretch could completely reshape the division. Castillo was acquired to prevent those stretches. A veteran capable of taking the baseball every fifth day and giving Chicago six or seven innings can stabilize a rotation that will increasingly depend on young arms. And that’s the second part of this. MORE: Scene at Yankee Stadium turns dangerous as 3 fans ran onto the field at the same time Hagen Smith and Tanner McDougal were promoted as Chicago pushes for the postseason. Smith, one of the organization’s premier pitching prospects, followed Castillo on Wednesday with a scoreless eighth inning. There’s something fitting about that sequence. Castillo doesn’t just provide innings. He’s a three-time All-Star who has pitched through pennant races, bad stretches and the adjustments that come after the league adjusts to you. Smith, McDougal and the rest of Chicago’s young staff are going to experience all of that for the first time. They now have somebody in the rotation who already has. And Wednesday suggested Castillo may still have enough stuff to contribute considerably more than mentorship. His changeup helped produce a 49 percent whiff rate and 36 percent called-strike-plus-whiff rate overall. This wasn’t a veteran surviving – he overwhelmed Cincinnati. That’s the version Chicago needs. The White Sox didn’t acquire Castillo strictly for 2026, and they didn’t acquire him strictly for the kids. They acquired him because those two timelines have suddenly collided. Chicago’s young pitchers represent where this organization is going. Luis Castillo can help stabilize them while giving the White Sox a much better chance of getting somewhere they didn’t expect this quickly – October. — Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
