They then hosted the Reds in a three-game set and narrowly missed another series victory. Cincinnati won Tuesday's opener 5-4 in 10 innings despite a late White Sox rally. Chicago responded with a dominant 5-0 shutout on Wednesday behind strong pitching, but the Reds captured yesterday's finale 9-8. The Sox have lost three straight on the road.
Detroit heads home after a successful road trip and series win over Cleveland. The Tigers swept the Giants in San Francisco last weekend behind outstanding pitching, winning 8-0, 3-1 in 10 innings, and 3-0. They took that momentum into the series against the Guardians. Detroit opened the series with a 6-4 victory, fell 6-4 on Wednesday, then bounced back yesterday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout. The Tigers have won five of their last six games and as a result have not just pulled to within striking distance of the Sox but the Tigers have also leapfrogged multiple teams to take possession of the final Wild Card spot.
Tonight is expected to be a bullpen game for the White Sox. Veteran left-hander Sean Newcomb (1-3, 2.66 ERA) is listed as the probable starter. Newcomb's most recent appearance came on August 11 against Cincinnati, when he worked one inning, allowed one unearned run, and took the loss in the White Sox's 5-4 extra-inning defeat. Prior to that outing, he delivered scoreless appearances against Cleveland on August 8 and August 9, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters over two innings. His lone start of 2026 came against Detroit on June 20, when he threw three scoreless innings as an opener in a bullpen game.
Detroit will counter with one of its most intriguing young pitchers, Jackson Jobe (1-0, 0.00). Jobe returned earlier this month following over a year on the shelf recovering from Tommy John surgery last Spring. Making his first big-league appearance since May 2025, the former top prospect fired five scoreless innings on August 8 in San Francsico, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four in Detroit's 8-0 victory. He threw 71 pitches, touched triple digits with his fastball, and looked every bit like the high-upside arm the Tigers envisioned before his injury.
