Who is Camden Brown? 5 things to know about Cowboys' undrafted rookie wide receiver

Here are five things to know about Dallas Cowboys undrafted rookie wide receiver Camden Brown, who stole the show with a two-touchdown performance in the Cowboys' preseason opener.

1. The basics

Name:Camden Brown

Hometown: Monroe, La. 

College: Auburn, Georgia Southern

Height/weight: 6-2, 204 pounds

2. Where'd he come from?

All due respect to Mr. Brown, but there's a good section of Cowboys fans who didn't know who he was until his performance in the preseason opener. That's rather understandable — Brown is an undrafted rookie free agent out of Georgia Southern, not exactly a blue-chip program.

He spent his first three collegiate seasons at Auburn but didn't find much playing time. He totaled just 26 receptions in three years with the Tigers. But he broke out after transferring to Georgia Southern for his senior season, finishing second in the Sun Belt Conference with 1,079 yards receiving.

He was also a killer red-zone threat at Southern, leading the conference with 14 touchdown receptions. That'd end up coming to fruition in his NFL debut. 

3. Taking a flier

Brown wasn't selected in April's NFL draft, but the Cowboys nabbed him shortly after it. Dallas added Brown as an undrafted free agent later in April, one of two undrafted rookie receivers the Cowboys brought to camp alongside SMU's Jordan Hudson.

4. Eye-popping preseason opener

Brown made his NFL debut in the Cowboys' preseason opener, against the defending champion Seattle Seahawks, no less.

And it was Brown who scored the first touchdown of the season for Dallas, catching a bomb from Sam Howell in traffic just before the end of the first half.

But he wasn't done there: He'd add another touchdown reception from Joe Milton in the second half, this one of the one-handed variety.

Brown scored the only two touchdowns of the night for the Cowboys, helping his squad to a 17-7 win to start the preseason.

5. Can he make the team?

That's the big question for Brown, who, whatever his chances were before the preseason opener, they only got better with his performance against the Seahawks.

Here's what Cowboys insider Joseph Hoyt wrote after the win over Seattle: 

After the way Brown played Saturday and after the way he’s played in training camp, it’s now realistic to consider him a major competitor in the race for one of the team’s final receiver spots. The top four spots are spoken for from CeeDee Lamb, to George Pickens, to Ryan Flournoy and to return specialist KaVontae Turpin. After Saturday’s game, when Brown was speaking with reporters, all four of them walked by and kept saying Cam’s name in unison. 

Brown’s entered the conversation for more than just his receiving ability, however. He rose the depth chart on special teams. There was a kickoff return where Brown was seen blocking his opponent downfield and up to the whistle. He and a teammate celebrated after.

“What I love about him is he does the little things, too,” Brian Schottenheimer said. “You watch him on special teams and one-on-one drills and things like that: he realizes that’s how you make this football team.

“That stuff matters.”
