BATTLE CREEK - A familiar name was on the leaderboard, but last year's champ Chris Voegler still has some work to do if he wants to defend his title.
Behind a large field, chasing the title of best golfer in the county, the 49th annual Calhoun County Amateur Golf Tournament began Saturday, Aug. 15 at Binder Park Golf Course with Day 1 action.
Brandon Grube led after the first round with a 4-under-par 68 to stand on top of the 75-player field. Colton Beard was one shot back at 79 with Jack Kyger third at 70. Voegler is looking for his second straight title and third crown in four years and is at 71, tied for fourth with Paul Koski, last year's runner-up.

Last year's Senior Division champ John Blasius was first in that division with a round of 70, four strokes ahead of second place with Roy Tooke and Tony Evans tied at 74.
Michael Kwasny, who won the Super Senior Division a year ago, was leading that group once again with a round of 69 with Mike Raymond in second at 74.
The final round will begin Sunday morning at 7:10 a.m.
