India are set to open their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, with the first Test scheduled from August 15 to 19, 2026. The series is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, and both sides will be keen to strengthen their WTC standings.

The BCCI's Men's Selection Committee announced India's 15-man squad on July 28, 2026. Several injury-related developments have since shaped the available options. Jasprit Bumrah, who had returned to the squad after missing the Afghanistan series in June 2026, was subsequently ruled out injured, with Auqib Nabi named as his replacement. Washington Sundar will also miss the first Test in Galle due to injury. The Galle surface is expected to be a turning track, though the new ball typically offers movement in the opening session, making the pace-spin balance an important consideration.

Here are five bowlers India should pick for the upcoming 1st Test against Sri Lanka

5. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is returning to India's Test squad after recovering from a tennis elbow injury sustained during IPL 2026. A left-arm orthodox spinner who also contributes valuable runs in the lower order, Jadeja is a natural fit for the turning conditions at Galle. His ability to bowl long spells and build pressure through accuracy makes him an automatic selection in this combination. The Galle surface historically assists left-arm spin, and Jadeja's all-round value adds balance to the lower order as well.

4. Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav is a left-arm wrist spinner who provides a different threat compared to the orthodox options in the squad. His ability to take wickets in Asian conditions makes him a specialist choice for a turning track like Galle. Kuldeep's variations, including the googly, can trouble right-handed and left-handed batters alike. Pairing him with Jadeja gives India two contrasting left-arm spin options, which can be difficult for opposition batters to read across a long innings.

3. Manav Suthar

Manav Suthar is a left-arm orthodox spinner who was included in the squad specifically as a spin option for Sri Lankan conditions. With Washington Sundar unavailable for the first Test, Suthar becomes a strong candidate to fill that role. His inclusion in the Playing XI would give India three spinners in the attack, which is a reasonable approach on a surface expected to assist turn from early in the match. Suthar's presence also provides cover if conditions deteriorate for the pace bowlers.

2. Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna is the second pace bowler who should complete India's five-bowler combination for the first Test. His height and ability to extract bounce make him a useful option even on a surface that is expected to turn. Krishna can be effective with the new ball and also provides an alternative angle for the captain to use in partnership with Siraj. With Bumrah unavailable, Krishna's role in the pace department becomes more significant for this match.

1. Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj is one of the two available pace bowlers in the squad alongside Prasidh Krishna. The new ball at Galle can offer movement during the opening session, and Siraj's ability to swing the ball and maintain a disciplined line makes him the preferred pace option. His experience in Test cricket gives him an edge in managing conditions that can shift quickly between sessions. Siraj is expected to lead the pace attack in Bumrah's absence.
