We are Bobby Layne days away from Texas football, and today’s “Thursday Thought” is all about the face of the franchise: Arch Manning. Earlier this week, Steve Sarkisian made an off-handed comment about Manning being more a “trash-talker” than he’s given credit for. While the headline itself means little, it can represent a larger, more important trend for the Longhorns QB.

Last season, there were a number of things that hampered Manning’s development. The foot injury and the struggles around him played a major role. On top of that, it’s hard to imagine the expectations didn’t weigh on the first-year starter early in the season.

Steve Sarkisian says Texas QB Arch Manning “talks shit more than people give him credit for.”

Says he and Colin Simmons were playfully talking trash in a recent practice.

That pressure seemingly began to fade away later in the season, the same time his play improved drastically. We won’t know if it’s entirely faded until Texas kicks off on September 5th, but Sark’s comment points to that being the case.

We got Arch Manning on the mic 🤘

Trash-talking happens at every football program around the country. Arch Manning is not unique when it comes to sharing words with opposing players or teammates. That being said, I do believe it shows the confidence and comfort Manning has among his team. Last season, it was Manning growing into the leadership role left behind by Quinn Ewers. Now, this is unequivocally Manning’s team, and the back-and-forth shows he is confident in that position.

Now, none of this is a guarantee Manning will meet all the expectations put on him this season. It is to say whatever those expectations are, Manning is seemingly much better equipped to handle them. Quarterback is a position that needs to be played smart, but can’t be played tight. It felt like Manning was playing the position “tight” for much of the season. If that tightness is gone this season, he’s in-line for a special campaign.

He just needs to get a little bit more refined and I'm a big believer in him" ~ @MoveTheSticks#PMSLivepic.twitter.com/1DS7i6s601

Fall camp headlines are always to be taken with a grain of salt. It’s a zero-sum game that can be hard to draw confident conclusions from. However, I do believe Arch Manning’s attitude and energy breaking through is a must for this Texas team. It was clear that came alive right when he did last season and that’s no coincidence.

There aren’t many things I’ll say with absolute confidence about this team. One thing I will say without hesitation: this is Arch Manning’s team. The trash-talking is a small sign of the confidence and comfort he has heading into his second season. It’ll need to be confirmed when the season kicks off but there are early signs that some of the things that plagued him a year ago might be a thing of the past.
