The Denver Broncos have a new offensive coordinator this season in Davis Webb, who took over play-calling duties from head coach Sean Payton during the offseason. One of the biggest decisions a coordinator has to make is whether they will call plays in the booth or at the field level. Webb, much like Payton, has decided to call plays from the sideline. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is excited about the prospect of having Webb on the sideline with the play sheet, which is what he prefers. "I’ve always loved it from a quarterback to a play caller when they’re on the sideline with me," Nix said last week. "I feel like they get the feel of the game a little bit differently. It’s obviously seeing the game from a different vantage point, but I think they get to feel the emotions on the sideline. They get to feel the comments from us coming off the sideline, what we’re seeing and all that kind of stuff." Since Webb has experience as a quarterback, Nix feels that Webb's perspective will be invaluable on the sideline, especially as he teaches Nix (and backups Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger during preseason). "From (Webb's) point of view and playing quarterback his whole career, I think that’s just where he feels comfortable," Nix said. "A lot of former quarterbacks like to call it from the sideline. I don’t know what that’s the case, but that just seems to be how play callers roll." Webb's leadership on the sideline may be a crucial audition for any future teams looking to hire him as a head coach in the 2027 offseason. Webb was already a top candidate in the 2026 coaching carousel before staying with Denver. The key communication between quarterbacks and playcallers will be on full display this fall. Nix is excited about the arrangement. "I like when the play caller is there with me and I can come off and have the eye-to-eye conversation," Nix said. "We can sit down and look at the pictures and go through them together and really get to hear from him and not have to call up to the office or get on a headset. I think the eye-to-eye communication is really important, so I’m excited that he’s going to be down there with us.” Time will tell if the arrangement is going to be a good one!
