Why Fever's Stephanie White might have the 'toughest job in professional sports' originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. Stephanie White was greeted with applause Friday night before the Indiana Fever defeated the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It was a marked departure from White's reception in the Fever's win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday, before which White had delivered a fiery speech defending her players from a number of recent controversies. White arguably has the toughest job in the WNBA. In a span of three years, the Fever has transformed from an afterthought into a contender whose entire regular-season schedule has been broadcast on national television. Indiana's trajectory as a franchise, for better and for worse, changed when it was afforded the chance to draft Caitlin Clark. Since she returned to the Fever in 2025, White has had to navigate Clark's superstardom while keeping All-Stars Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell engaged, and eliminating distractions prompted by Sophie Cunningham's clumsy comments about transgender participation in women's sports. Even still, Indiana has a 22-12 record and the league's top-rated offense, despite the number of outside distractions and competing interests. White and Phoenix Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts know each other well; they are both members of the USA Basketball coaching staff, which will try to lead Team USA to a fifth successive FIBA Women's World Cup next month.

Nate Tibbetts spoke on the recent dialogue surrounding politics and the WNBA, especially involving his USA Basketball coaching partner, Stephanie White. "It really pisses me off. It's disappointing. This is a great league. We've got great players. There are great stories, great… pic.twitter.com/CQwzmmbgDg — Hayden Cilley (@HaydenCilley) August 15, 2026 Before the Mercury's home game against the Portland Fire on Sunday night, Tibbetts claimed that White has the toughest job in professional sports because of how frequently fans bash her for a host of reasons -- largely, perceived slights toward Clark and Cunningham. "Some of the things that Steph (White) has to go through -- that's wrong. There's no other coach, in any professional sport, that has to go through the stuff that she does, and I think of her a lot," Tibbetts told reporters on Saturday. "It's not fair. She's hired to coach basketball. They got a great team and they're just dealing with stuff that doesn't really matter and so that still pisses me off." The Fever franchise fully backs White as it pursues a WNBA championship. That top-down synergy has so far insulated Indiana from the noise that would ruin another team's season -- and it has reaffirmed White's strength and talent as a head coach. More WNBA news:
