The Golden State Warriors stood still this offseason and have since said that they're okay with this offseason being a "gap year" and even if they aren't competitive next season, they're comfortable with their ability to move forward in the future.
This mindset came after an offseason where they could have been major players, but were not. Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard all ended up being players that were available on the trade market or in free agency and the Warriors were either never in the conversation or just struck out on all three.
Having the mindset of being okay with standing still and waiting it out until next season is a huge problem for one player in particular: Steph Curry.

Time Is Running Out on Curry
Curry is heading into the final year of his contract with the Warriors and while he will be eligible for an extension this August and the Warriors are confident that they could sign him to it, this could be the last contract that Curry signs in his career and the Warriors could spend out trying to wait out the rest of the league rather than compete with them.
He's 38-years-old and while he's continued to produce at a high level, averaging 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists while shooting 48.8% from the field last season, the Warriors can't count on that production forever and Curry will have to retire sooner or later.

That's why the Warriors can't afford to simply wait out the rest of the league, especially with the rest of the league getting better around them. If they're truly serious about trying to win with Curry still on the roster, they need to start getting aggressive quickly about making that happen.
The Issue With Standing Still
With the Warriors neither rebuilding or making a push for big name stars, they're simply stagnating while their competition improves. Waiting until next year only takes more time off the clock and puts more pressure on the front office without knowing what the market will look like next year.

As it stands, the Warriors are already long shots to be a serious playoff team, though a healthy Jimmy Butler, another aging star, will certainly help with that. Still, a lot needs to change before Golden State can be considered a real contender and even then they'll still have to try and match up against teams like the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Curry has had a storied career, but if the Warriors want to add to it one more time, they don't have any more time to waste.
