ARDMORE, PA — Adam Bresnu is carrying the weight of an entire nation on his back. The 22-year-old rising senior at Texas Tech was born in Paris, France, but with a Moroccan mother spent plenty of time in the African nation, as well. Morocco has only 34 golf courses. Bresnu estimates he has played about 20 of them, though he might be forgetting a few. That's fewer courses than can be found in Rhode Island, a state nearly 300 times smaller than Morocco. That hasn't stopped Bresnu from dreaming big this week at Merion, where he's one of eight quarterfinalist remaining at the 2026 U.S. Amateur. "I think the main goal for me is to try to show kids in Morocco, even young people, that if I can do it, everyone can do it," Bresnu said. "It's just to show that even if you don't have a lot of golf courses or a facility, you can still make it."

This week, Bresnu has made history as the first Moroccan player to make match play at the world's greatest amateur championship, and every round he keeps winning, he keeps breaking barriers. It's something he has grown accustomed to at every level, and now about to enter his senior season at Texas Tech, Bresnu is only two wins away from earning a spot in the Masters and three from hoisting the Havemeyer Trophy. His college career started in Odessa, Texas, an oil town about two hours south of Lubbock. There he was dominant, winning nine times over two years and earning the 2025 Jack Nicklaus Award as the NJCAA Player of the Year. He has 30 top-10 finishes over two seasons and was the top-ranked junior college player in the country. He has also made a splash at the professional level. Bresnu became the first Arab-born golfer to make the cut in a DP World Tour Rolex Series event at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January of 2025. He also tied for sixth at the PIF Saudi international in December of 2024, the best performance by a Moroccan ever in a world-ranked professional event. And at the U.S. Am, those historic milestones continue to be added to his resume. "I'm so happy to be here, to be honest," Bresnu said. "I'm so happy to be here, it's unbelievable. To be the first Moroccan ever to play the U.S. Am and to make it to match play, it's unbelievable, so I'm just happy to be here." Bresnu took our fourth-seeded Finn Koelle of Germany on Thursday morning before dispatching Max Herendeen, the most dominant player through the first two rounds of match play at the U.S. Amateur. Bresnu had no stress in a 5-and-4 victory against the U.S. Walker Cup hopeful. On Friday, he gets England's Jack Whaley, who nearly made an ace in Wednesday's playoff just to get into match play and has been cruising since. Bresnu is going to stick to his game plan. He's fiery on the course, playing with plenty of emotion and theatrics. It's just the way he likes it. "That's the way I am in match play," he said. "Sometimes I'm not my best friend in my mind, and in match play, I just try to support my mind, just try to be my own best friend. That's who I am. Also, I know it can make mad the partner, so that's why I do it." At the end of the day, the emotions are for those youngsters watching back home. "Mostly for the kids in Morocco, to show that we can do it," Bresnu said. Back home, an emerging generation of golfers is getting that message loud and clear.
