The Miami Dolphins traveled to Landover, Maryland earlier this week for a joint practice session with the Washington Commanders before the two teams met for a preseason game on Friday.
In that contest, the Dolphins played their starters for one drive, scoring a touchdown, but after that, they were hard to watch, as Washington scored 20 unanswered points to win the game.
As we continue working our way through this game, let's talk about some of the players who had a tough night or aspects of the game that need improvement.
QB Quinn Ewers
After Malik Willis played the first drive and helped the team find the end zone to put them up 7-0, Ewers entered the game. In roughly two quarters of work, he completed 1-of-8 passes for 27 yards, which came on a blown coverage, and an interception.
Ewers has also struggled in training camp, and this performance may have put his roster spot in jeopardy.
QB Cam Miller
Miller took over for Ewers in the third quarter, and he completed just 3-of-11 passes for 39 yards with two interceptions. He didn't get much help from his offensive line or wide receivers, but he was tough to watch himself. It was unlikely that Miller would make the roster out of camp, and this reinforced that belief.
WRs not named Caleb Douglas or Malik Washington
Washington had three receptions on the opening possession, and Douglas made a highlight, one-handed catch on the first drive as well. Apart from that, the rest of the wide receiver room caught 3 of their 12 targets, with Jalen Tolbert catching that previously-mentioned pass from Ewers on a blown coverage.
A.J. Henning is the only other wideout who made a positive contribution, catching one pass for 24 yards, as he continues his strong summer. Everyone else should be fighting for their jobs.
Run defense
Washington was committed to the run on Friday, as their trio of Kaytron Allen, Robert Henry Jr. and Jerome Ford carried the ball 36 times. While Miami kept Allen under 4.0 yards per carry, they had a harder time slowing down Henry, who rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts (6.25-yard average). Linebackers weren't filling holes fast enough, and defensive linemen weren't setting the edge strong enough. That could be a killer in the regular season.
