The New York Yankees were hit with a tough blow to their pitching staff on Monday night.
Left-hander Max Fried was placed on the 15-day IL with a bone bruise in his throwing elbow.
Fried's injury is identical to the one that kept him out for two months earlier this season.
It's a horrible turn of events for the Yankees, who also announced that Carlos Rodon will come off the IL on Tuesday and start against the Baltimore Orioles.
With less than two months remaining in the regular season, it's fair to wonder if Fried will take the mound again this year.
Fried may not be out for the season
"It's unclear how much time Fried will miss, but a team source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to candidly describe the situation, said it is unfair to assume the lefty's season is over," The Athletic's Chris Kirschner reported Monday.
The Yankees would love to have a three-man rotation of Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, and Fried in the postseason.

But the health of the rotation, including Fried and Rodon's, throughout the rest of the season, will determine New York's playoff plans.
For now, Fried's injury likely keeps Will Warren in the Yankees' rotation. Clarke Schmidt is also expected to return from his Tommy John Surgery rehab at some point.
