The Yankees couldn't complete the series sweep, falling to the Seattle Mariners by a score of 1-0 on Thursday afternoon in the Bronx.
Here are the key takeaways...
--Max Fried, who has been terrific since coming off of the IL, pitched 5.0 innings of one-run ball, but he didn't have his sharpest stuff. He only allowed five hits, one of which was a Weston Wilson solo home run in the top of the second inning, and struck out four while walking two. But he threw 88 pitches (55 of which were strikes), and he seemed to have a lot of trouble locating his breaking ball.
--After breaking out for 10 runs on Wednesday night, the Yankees bats couldn't do much of anything against Mariners starter Logan Gilbert. The righty went 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven and walking only one.
-- The Yankees caught a big break in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Jose Caballero was dead to rights trying to steal second base, but Colt Emerson dropped the ball on the tag. The inning stayed alive, but Amed Rosario was called out on strikes with runners on the corners to end the threat.
--The Yankees didn't have a ton of chances to score, but Trent Grisham didn't help matters in the bottom of the third, when what should have been a double was erased because Grisham popped up on the slide and was tagged out. The Yankees should have had runners on second and third with one out, but instead it was the second out of the inning, and the third out came quickly after.
The Yanks struck out 10 times and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
-- The Yankees' bullpen did a good job of keeping the Mariners at bay following Fried's outing. Ryan Yarbrough, Yerry De los Santos, and Fernando Cruz combined for 4.0 scoreless innings.
