In every 2026 American League MVP conversation, none mention Aaron Judge, Cal Raleigh, or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. This season, one name has taken center stage, and nothing else has threatened it.
Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez is having an otherworldly season at the plate. So much so that he’s chasing an even higher prestige than an MVP, and something that hasn’t been done in 70 years.
A Triple Crown is when one batter leads his respective league in home runs, RBI and batting average. Soon-to-be Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera did it last in 2012, leading the American League in all three. But it’s been since Mickey Mantle’s 1956 season when one batter led all of Major League Baseball in the trio of categories. Alvarez has a shot at it.
Inside the Swing
Alvarez hasn’t skipped a beat since debuting with Houston in 2019. He has an unbelievable career OPS of .976, higher than Mike Trout‘s and Shohei Ohtani’s.
He already had one remarkable season in 2022, but has taken the next step in his attack in 2026. Baseball Savant has given Alvarez’s batting run value a perfect rating of 100 this year, with 50 being league average.
On the same scale, he doesn’t drop below a rating of 97 on eight offensive metrics. Everything excels when breaking down the fibers of his swing, from barrel percentage to bat speed to hard-hit percentage.
As of Aug 14, Alvarez has more home runs than he does games without a base hit. He’s become the hardest out in baseball, and the hardest to defend. He keeps fielders guessing by landing hits all across the diamond and exhibiting an MLB-leading exit velocity.
In 1956, nobody was close to Mantle’s homers or average. However, he finished only two RBI behind the player with the second-most. Alvarez will face contenders for all three stats, setting up a race for history.
The Competition
As of Aug 14, Alvarez only leads the majors in batting average. His .325 is enough to put him comfortably above Luis Arraez and Otto Lopez. Arraez is the biggest threat, but is trending in the wrong direction. Since he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies at the deadline, his average has dropped from .324 to .316.
RBI will be difficult since the stat is heavily situational. If the batters ahead of Mantle had struck out just twice more, Alvarez would be shooting for a record last held in 1942.
Washington’s CJ Abramsleads the league with 91 RBI, and Alvarez follows closely with 89. Cincinnati Reds’ rookie Sal Stewart will remain in the mix as well with 89.
That said, home runs will be his biggest feat. Alvarez led before Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber had a two-homer night at the 2026 Field of Dreams Game. Alvarez connected on a 368-foot bomb Friday to bring his total to 36, one shy of Schwarber.
This feat hasn’t been accomplished in 70 years for a reason. One batter cannot control the tides of 162 unpredictable games and end up on top of three different peaks. What Alvarez is doing is truly a 1-in-100 event.
“Yordan is the best hitter in the sport right now,” Mark DeRosasaid on MLB Network. “He has made it look easy since Opening Day, and it’s super impressive … when Juan Soto, who can make the claim to be the best hitter in the game, is seeking out Yordan Alvarez at the All-Star Game to pick his brain on approach and swing? That’s it.”
