A new trade scenario has been circulating in the media recently. The trade rumor suggests that Zion Williamson would be traded to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Fred VanVleet and Jabari Smith Jr.
Although the rumor is only speculative, this trade seems sound, as it could benefit both teams. One of the main reasons it could benefit the Rockets is that Reed Sheppard has proven he is ready and able to take on a more prominent role for the team.
When Fred VanVleet was injured last season, Sheppard took over for a majority of his minutes. Across the 82 games he played throughout the 2025-26 season, he averaged 26.2 points, while shooting 39.4% from three-point range. In doing so, he has emerged as one of the most efficient perimeter shooters on the team.
Not only did he prove his worth on the offense, but he also displayed his value on the defensive end by averaging 1.5 steals per game along with .7 blocks per game. He earned himself a defensive rating of 113.2, proving that he is efficient on both ends of the floor.
Sheppard’s performances increased his potential, and trading VanVleet would allow a larger opportunity for Sheppard to develop. VanVleet also carries a risk of injuries, as his ACL tear makes him more susceptible to future injuries.
However, Williamson has also struggled with injuries, offsetting the risk implied. The value that Williamson adds to Houston is greater than the risk, as he is an elite player when he is healthy. Houston has a top-tier defense, and Williamson’s offensive prowess could make their offense dominant.
Williamson would provide the Rockets with another elite interior scorer. Last season, he averaged 21 points per game while shooting 60% from the field. His strong presence in the paint would create spacing for Kevin Durant and the rest of the perimeter shooters.
Because of this, Williamson being paired with Durant would potentially give Houston one of the most threatening offenses in the NBA. Williamson’s physicality also allows him to fit in well with Ime Udoka’s coaching strategies.
Williamson replacing Smith in the lineup would increase the team’s playmaking capabilities, as Smith is mostly used as a “stretch four”. Williamson would make the offense more fluid and creative, making it harder for the opposing team to defend against.
